I Want to Be a Tree Part 2

But his delight is in the law of the Lord,

And in His law he meditates day and night.

Psalm 1:2

There is nothing like the Word of God. It is the start to everything good in life. Blessings come all over us when we start off each morning and end each day thinking about God’s words.

Think about Psalm 1:2.

  • But his delight is in the law of the Lord, I love the Word of God! I am growing in my love for the Word of God.
  • And in His law he meditates day and night. I remind myself of God’s ways at least twice a day. I ask Holy Spirit to help me understand His words as I contemplate them.

We all know what it is like to have a tune stuck in our head. What if you were to choose which song got stuck instead of leaving the soundtrack of your mind to chance.

When I was a kid “scripture songs” were very popular. People would sing scripture verses word for word. Recordings were made of these songs so that people all over the world were able to learn and sing the scriptures together.

Putting scripture to music is a great way to store up God’s words in your memory. I find that verses that I learned to sing as a child “randomly” pop up in my mind all the time. I am able to sing the songs, even silently to myself, as I go about my day.  This is one of my favorite ways to meditate on His law. What a blessing!

I tried to find a Psalm 1 song for you, but I couldn’t seem to choose one that I thought would appeal to the majority of my readers. If you know a good one, please share it with me!

Phantom Worry

The city that I live in seems to be in a competition with Chicago for the title of “Windy City.” We regularly get high winds blowing in over the flat prairie. The wind has made our home life interesting.

  1. When we have a combination of snow and wind, we almost always end up with a 2-3 foot snow drift covering our driveway. The crazy thing is that the yard will be nearly snow free. For some reason the way our house is situated causes the wind to pick the snow up from the yard and drop it into the drive way.
  2. We have had two trampolines over the years. The first one blew away in the middle of the night. The wind picked it up and carried it all the way down the street, past 5 or 6 houses, and dropped it into a pond where it presumably still is today. As the trampoline traveled down the street, it left pieces of itself along the way in the neighbors’ yards. We had to pay $160 to repair our neighbor’s fence. We tied the second trampoline down firmly, but it eventually wore out from use so we got rid of it.
  3. A few years ago my parents gave the kids a basketball goal for Christmas. It was the kind that you put sand in to weigh it down, as opposed to the kind that you cement into the ground. Even with 300 pounds of sand, the wind regularly blew it over. We had to be careful to not park the car near it on windy days. Eventually one of the metal rods that held the goal up, snapped clean through because of the pressure from the wind.

When my husband and I woke up one recent windy morning, we had the same thought. We both experienced a moment of worry, only to breathe a sigh of relief when we remembered that we had nothing left in the yard to blow away.

We laughed together, and Christopher said, “That was like phantom worry.” It was kind of like the stories you hear about amputees who still feel sensations from their missing limbs. Or maybe what more of us can relate to, the feeling of your phone vibrating when it really isn’t.

It made me think, how many of the things we worry about are even reality. Maybe a huge portion of our worry is only a matter of habit. What do you think?

Do You Think I Should Practice What I Preach?

Recently I went through several days of extreme sickness. I literally did not have enough strength to hold my head up and had to lie down for five days straight. I actually felt worn out just from lying down existing. Turns out I had a severe sinus infection or possibly bronchitis.

I am feeling much better now, but I’ve got to tell you, that was hard.

I have had to really practice what I preach lately. There is just something about not feeling well physically that tears away at your emotions.

I am getting better, but I have had to choose to put my focus on positive hopeful things more than I normally do.

Philippians 4:4-9

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

I want to encourage you to join me in picking what to think about.

Let’s harness our thoughts starting right now so that we can live in peace today!

Cuba Update

I had a wonderful time on my trip to Cuba. This was my second visit to the island, and it was everything I expected it to be and more.

The first time I went I felt such joy the moment I stepped off the plane and into the immigrations area of the airport. It is like there is something in the atmosphere in Cuba that my spirit connects with.

As I spent time walking along the ocean and riding a bus throughout the island my spirit came alive more and more. The only way I can explain it is to say that the airways feel different there.

Each time I have gone to Cuba I have returned with fresh clarity and vision for my life and my family. It is amazing what getting away to a different location can do for your focus.

One of the very best parts of my most recent trip was that I was able to take a few people with me. I absolutely loved seeing my team members come alive as God stirred up old and new things in their hearts.

One of the greatest joys of my life is to see people prosper in their souls. I love to see them living life to the fullest. Life is too short to sit back and wait for something interesting to happen.

We have to happen to life!

It Was the Very Wishy Washy Time of Night…

Many nights at bedtime my mind kicks into high gear with ideas and strategies for how to best do all the things I want to do in life. I feel so inspired that I almost want to skip the whole night and get started right away on the next day.

Other nights I start to feel bombarded with doubts. I think we all have a certain time of day that doubts try to creep in.

If I ever feel doubtful it is generally at night before bed. Things that seem like a wonderful challenge during the day tend to be much more scary at bedtime when I’m worn out. I am always the the most vulnerable and discouraged at night when I’m tired.

It is so helpful to know this about myself. I am able to notice when I’m feeling unsure of myself which gives me a chance to choose to set my worries aside and reconsider my life with renewed perspective the next morning.

I have also learned that when I’m feeling doubts creeping in I should never make any important decisions. I would never accomplish anything important in life if I didn’t put off decision making until I have a peaceful perspective.

Things generally are much clearer after a good night’s sleep.

Each day has fresh grace from heaven and sometimes the grace for the day runs out just before it is time for me to close my eyes and recharge.

Here’s one of my favorite songs for refocusing and de-stressing:

Sorrow may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning. Ps. 30:5

How Can I Help You?

I really, really want you to live with peace on the inside. I talk to people all the time who are confused and stressed and just plain need help.  I love to find creative solutions to problems so that people can move forward in life. You really can live free on the inside.  You don’t have to spend your life feeling like everything is spiraling out of control.

It’s important to start to take notice of what you’re thinking about.  You really can’t afford to go all day without being aware of the thoughts, maybe even more importantly the tone or flavor of thoughts, that are running through your head.  That’s really the first step to living with a sound mind.  Be aware of what you’re thinking about.

Secondly, you need to find out where the thoughts you’re having are coming from.  Ask the Holy Spirit (your best Counselor) why you are thinking the things you are thinking.  He really wants to help you. Maybe your thoughts are coming from the atmosphere you’ve been in all day, the music you’ve been hearing in the background, or maybe they are a part of deeply ingrained patterns from your youth.  A lot of times different personality types tend to have more positive or negative leanings in their thoughts.  You really want to get to know you.

Thirdly, you can begin to replace toxic thoughts with kingdom ones.  Reading the Bible and applying the scriptures to your own life is super helpful.  Find a verse that encourages you and stick your name in it.  Read it out loud and memorize it.  You might set it as a daily reminder in your phone so that you will meditate on it everyday.

You really can get your self control back and own the space in your own head. You are powerful!

Working towards Heart Connection with our God

I love Holy Spirit so much.  He’s just so good.  The intimate fellowship that I experience with Him is like nothing else in this life.  It fills me with peace that is beyond comprehension.  I know that this is a huge part of what Jesus was talking about when He said, “I come to give you life, and life more abundant.”  I’m so thankful to Jesus that He went to His Father and sent Holy Spirit to us: the Spirit of Truth who teaches us everything we need to know.

The devil hates for us to experience this sweet fellowship with Holy Spirit.  He whispers so many lies to keep us from this divine connection.  Some of the lies he used on me over the years were:  “You’re not really hearing from the Lord or feeling anything really spiritual.  You are just making that up,” “You’re not as spiritual as other people, so you might as well serve others and not even try to have spiritual encounters, ” and “If you were really spiritual, you could connect with God without using music as a crutch.”    Wow, do you see how accusing those statements are?  I had to learn to recognize where the thoughts in my head were coming from.  Any thought that is accusing and keeping me from connecting with God, definitely is not from God!!  What freedom!  When I realized that all of these years I really had been so sincere in my love for God, and that He knew it and loved that about me, I started to enter into His presence in a whole new way.  Now when I lie down to soak, I have confidence.  I know that I love Him, and He loves me.  I have thoughts running through my head like, “Holy Spirit, I love you so much.  I love it when you come and spend time with me,” “Jesus, thank you so much that I’m am clean, and it’s my nature to love,” and “Father, thank you that I’m your child and you love to give me good gifts.”

That’s a little of my journey in connecting with Him, who is our Life.  I hope you are encouraged to keep working towards heart connection with the One who loves you like no other.
