Are You Sleeping with a Python?

This morning as I was getting my kids ready for school, my 13 year old son shook me up by telling me about a story he read before bed last night. He said that in the story a woman had a pet python.  Over time she noticed that her beloved pet was not eating. She took the snake to the veterinarian to see what could be done about the problem.  The doctor asked an odd question, “Does your pet sleep with you?” Yuck! Turns out that indeed the pet snake shared the woman’s bed.  The doctor proceeded to inform the woman that her beloved python was starving itself so that it would be hungry enough to eat her when just the right moment arrived!

Wow.  Picture that for a moment.

This story troubles me so much.  It makes me want to just weep for people who I love, who are sleeping with their “pythons” and believing that it is a safe and acceptable way to live.

Rest Assured:

Your sin will find you out. (Numbers 32:23b)

It’s time to take a big ax and chop off the head of that ugly snake. Don’t delay another day. I beg you to do it now before it swallows you alive.

If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into hell. (Matthew 5:30)

Maybe you need to get rid of your phone or cable, or maybe you have some friendships or a relationship that you need to end. These measures are not too extreme.

What if You Were to Become a Celebrity…

Social media seems to be a free for all where you can sling slander however much you like.

I read a tweet by Candace Cameron Bure the other day where she asked people to please send encouraging comments and tweets to her.  She mentioned that she was getting an onslaught of mean reactions, and that it was really discouraging.

Imagine being a public figure and having everyone pick apart your clothing style choices for your big event right where you and God and everyone else can read it.

Imagine having to never get online because you never know what horrible thing someone spewed about you and trying to stay positive in the midst of all that is too overwhelming.

Imagine truly trying to make a difference in the world and having people from all areas of society picking you to pieces.

Imagine accidentally becoming famous and having the whole world scrutinize your children every moment of every day.

Well known people are still people:

They are real.

They have real spouses.

They have real children.

They have real feelings.

Spreading gossip and rumors about a well-known person is still wrong. Being famous does not make someone a fair target. Be kind, rewind….or better yet think before you speak.

You might just become well known yourself one day…..

Please comment which boundaries would you set to protect yourself and your family if you suddenly became famous?

Mind Blowing Expansion

Psalm 19:1 the heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.

Many scientists say that the universe is always expanding. When I read this verse recently I was struck by the comparison between natural universal expansion and the fact that God’s kingdom is constantly moving forward and spreading out.

And of the increase of His kingdom there shall be no end. (Isaiah 9:7)

It appears that the universe is a shadow.

I remember staring at the night sky with such wonder when I was growing up.  When I was in 3rd grade I went to a planetarium on a school field trip.  I still remember that as one of the most impacting events in my education. I was absolutely stunned as we stared up at the dome ceiling and learned all about the stars.

It’s so mind blowing. 1,300,000 earths can fit inside the sun, and the sun is really just one tiny star amongst more galaxies than our minds can comprehend.

Psalm 19:1-6 (Message Bible)

1-2 God’s glory is on tour in the skies,
God-craft on exhibit across the horizon.
Madame Day holds classes every morning,
    Professor Night lectures each evening.

3-4 Their words aren’t heard,
    their voices aren’t recorded,
But their silence fills the earth:
    unspoken truth is spoken everywhere.

4-5 God makes a huge dome
    for the sun—a superdome!
The morning sun’s a new husband
    leaping from his honeymoon bed,
The daybreaking sun an athlete
    racing to the tape.

That’s how God’s Word vaults across the skies
    from sunrise to sunset,
Melting ice, scorching deserts,
    warming hearts to faith.

God’s majesty and power and glory are expanding indefinitely forever.

He cannot be contained. You can try to box Him in if you really want to….

You can do a “Jonah” and run, but you can’t hide from His kingdom purposes in your life. His kingdom is always growing, expanding, multiplying, AND….

He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it. (Phil. 1:6)

If this encouraged you at all, I would love to hear about it.

Cause it’s the Law!

Do you remember being a kid and playing with friends always fighting for who was in charge? Because I’m the boss of you! Because I said so.  Because I’m bigger and older and smarter and we’re doing things my way, or I quit!

Have you ever tried to take this approach with God? It seems to be rampant in our culture.  No moral absolutes! I get to believe whatever I want, and you have to suck it up and be happy about it.

Can this really be the path to peace? Can your heart truly be at rest when you break the law?

Lately I’ve been obsessed with Psalm 19.  It just keeps sucking me in and racing through my heart.

“The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul” (Psalm 19:7a)

Take a deep breath and soak that one in……

Can your soul be restored by obedience to the King?

Or was He just kidding.

“The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple” (vs.7b)

Can your mind be enhanced simply by trusting that He is honest?

“The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart” (vs. 8a)

Can you shake off depression by knowing what His rules are?

“The commandment of the Lord is PURE….enlightening the eyes” (vs. 8b)

Can your face shine radiantly because you make the right choice?

“The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever” (vs. 9a)

Can you live clean forever?

“The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether” (vs.9b)

Can you be righteous through and through?

“More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold, sweeter also than the honey, and the honeycomb.”(vs. 10)

Can a law really be a delight? Can obeying a rule be better than having piles of money or the best cuisine in the world?

Maybe God’s law really is the High way.  Could it be that He really is bigger and older and smarter than us?!

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (vs.14)
